Welcome to Ghana! Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, you will be greeted by your tour director and escorted to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy your first traditional Ghanaian meal or a cultural and historical orientation session to prepare you for the days ahead.

Explore Accra, starting with the bustling Makola Market, where you can see the daily lives of Ghanaians as they hustle and bargain. Visit the Ghana National Museum for an overview of the country’s history, followed by a trip to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum to learn about Ghana’s independence leader. End the day at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for Pan Africanism and Independence Square, which contains monuments of Ghana’s independence struggle.
Overnight: Accra
Depart Accra and head towards the Volta Region, stopping at Krobo-Odumase to learn about bead-making traditions and even make your own beads. Continue to Amedzofe, the highest settlement in Ghana, and explore a former German monastery. Hike to the top of Mount Gemi for a stunning sunset view over the Volta Region with Lake Volta in the distance.

Visit Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa, where a short hike will bring you to the lower falls, and for the adventurous, a longer hike leads to the upper falls with a beautiful swimming hole. After exiting the Agumatsa Forest Reserve, visit the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, formed as part of a U.S. Peace Corps initiative, to interact with mona monkeys. Head to your accommodation in Ho for the night.

This morning, explore Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in Africa, in Akosombo. Enjoy a boat cruise under the bridge connecting the east and west sides of the lake. Afterward, travel west to Koforidua.

Travel northwest to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn about the rich history and traditions of the Ashanti people, followed by a visit to the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum. Discover the recreated Golden Stool, a significant artifact of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Overnight: Kumasi
Visit Kejetia Market, the largest market in West Africa, with over 11,000 stalls attracting traders from across the region. Explore local Ashanti villages to learn about kente weaving traditions and Adinkra symbols. Try your hand at weaving in the village of Adanwomase.

Travel south to Cape Coast, the former capital of Ghana known for its colonial architecture and UNESCO World Heritage slave castle. Visit St. George’s Castle in Elmina and stand at the “point of no return.” Later, tour Cape Coast Castle, which houses a museum on slavery and European colonization.

Visit Kakum National Park and walk across seven canopy bridges hanging thirty meters above the forest floor. After descending, take a nature walk through the forest to discover various flora species and their medicinal values. In the afternoon, visit the Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind to learn about the students’ daily lives and interact with them.

Participate in a cooking workshop at Global Mamas Cooking Workshop to learn how to prepare traditional Ghanaian dishes. Enjoy a traditional cultural performance featuring Ghanaian and West African dance and music, with opportunities for African dance and drumming lessons.

Spend a relaxing day at the beach, watching local fishermen and enjoying the coastal scenery. In the afternoon, return to Accra, passing through quiet fishing villages. In the evening, gather for dinner to reflect on your experiences and share lessons learned.

Visit the Christianborg Castle to learn about its historical significance and role in Ghana’s path to independence. Explore Jamestown, home to the Jamestown Lighthouse, Ussher Fort, and the fishing harbor, and learn about the local way of life and colonial history. Finally, visit the Centre for National Culture to bargain for paintings, masks, and other crafts before heading to the airport for your flight home.
